About the Muon3-board

Muon3-board is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by muonTelescope, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 160 × 120 mm, with 208 components from 45 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 99 capacitors and 62 resistors.

It belongs with the sensors and science & space designs in this gallery.

Upadted clean sheet design

In plain English: High-energy particles called muons constantly rain down from space. Muon3 builds small, portable detectors ("muon telescopes") that use special plastic panels. When a muon passes through, the plastic gives off a tiny flash of light that is captured by sensitive sensors and fast electronics.

The project aims to network many of these affordable detectors (using cellular links for remote control and data). This lets researchers study cosmic ray air showers, monitor space weather, and do basic directional measurements with muons. It supports both scientific research and…

Muon3-board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Muon3-board use?

The Muon3-board is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Muon3-board?

The Muon3-board measures 160 × 120 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Muon3-board?

208 components, from 45 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Muon3-board design files?

From the muonTelescope/muon3 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Muon3-board design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which muonTelescope chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Muon3-board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
