Underwater environments (a) add a lot of noise and (b) distort signals due to reflections.

Here, we use a FM/AM/OFDM scheme to send bits.

Users typically prefer some tactile feedback when they hit a key, and this system doesn't naturally provide that. As such, we experimented with adding a soft (low coercivity) magnetic material (1-2mm mild steel ball bearings) above the Hall-effect sensor, to provide a small pull-in magnetic force when the stylus is brought close to the key. This provides tacticle sensation to the user that they have actually touched a key. It's essential that this…

Unkey: common questions

What microcontroller does the Unkey use?

The Unkey is built around the TEENSY 4.0 (HEADERS), from the NXP family.

How big is the Unkey PCB?

The Unkey measures 67 × 82.1 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Unkey?

139 components, from 39 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Unkey design files?

From the natecermak/unkey repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Unkey design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with natecermak. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Unkey without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug NXP firmware against it before you order a PCB.
