About the DST-MotherBoard PCB

DST-MotherBoard is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by nicolas-viale, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 150 × 60 mm, with 8 components from 8 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the SC0918, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 4 connectors, 2 switches, 1 module and 1 diode.

It belongs with the science & space, displays & leds and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

We aim to design a miniaturised, low-cost visible light and near-infrared spectrometer in a handheld form-factor to analyse fruit ripeness and other VIS/NIR applications including use in schools and universities.

We aim to design a miniaturised, low-cost visible light and near-infrared spectrometer in a handheld form-factor to analyse fruit ripeness and other VIS/NIR applications including use in schools and universities. Existing products are found in the range of between £400-1000 and we aim to produce an alternative which will be more affordable and accessible.

Currently, the project consists of a custom RP2040 microcontroller board with an e-paper display to minimise power draw. The spectral sensing will use AMS-OSRAM's spectral sensor chips which has shown positive results in testing but in…

DST-MotherBoard: common questions

What microcontroller does the DST-MotherBoard use?

The DST-MotherBoard is built around the SC0918, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the DST-MotherBoard PCB?

The DST-MotherBoard measures 150 × 60 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the DST-MotherBoard?

8 components, from 8 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the DST-MotherBoard design files?

From the nicolas-viale/low-cost_VIS-NIR_spectrometer repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the DST-MotherBoard design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with nicolas-viale. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the DST-MotherBoard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
