About the Flightcontroller PCB

Flightcontroller is an open source STM32 PCB design by nimaakbari2006, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 36 × 36 mm, with 67 components from 30 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F405RGTx, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the ICM-42688-P, SPX3819M5-L-3-3, W25Q128JVS and AT7456ELAH_C42388749. By type, the board carries 31 capacitors, 18 resistors, 5 ICs, 5 connectors, 2 crystals and 2 switches.

It belongs with the robotics & motion, power & battery and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

Custom power distribution board and STM32F405 flight controller PCBs designed in KiCad for a 5-inch FPV drone. Dual synchronous buck converters, ICM-42688-P gyro, 4-layer layout, Betaflight-compatible.

Two custom PCBs designed from scratch in KiCad for a 5-inch FPV drone, plus complete component selection and compatibility validation for the full build. This project covers the full stack: switching power supply design, a Betaflight-compatible flight controller, and systems-level integration of the entire aircraft.

The goal was to replace the stock electronics of a 5-inch FPV drone with custom-designed hardware, as an electrical engineering portfolio project. Two boards were designed:

Flightcontroller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Flightcontroller use?

The Flightcontroller is built around the STM32F405RGTx, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Flightcontroller PCB?

The Flightcontroller measures 36 × 36 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Flightcontroller?

67 components, from 30 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Flightcontroller design files?

From the nimaakbari2006/fpv-drone-flight-controller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Flightcontroller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which nimaakbari2006 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Flightcontroller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
