About the Project-Okapi PCB

Project-Okapi is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by NorthernWidget, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 64.8 × 135 mm, with 251 components from 115 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA1284M, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the TLV61220DBV, TPS62822DLC, TPS61032RSA, BQ2980RUG and TPS2105. By type, the board carries 87 resistors, 50 capacitors, 48 ICs, 17 diodes, 10 connectors and 8 transistors.

It belongs with the power & battery, sensors and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

Hardware designs for a large scale high performance telemetered data logger, centered around a Particle Boron RF module

Okapi data logger (Resnik v0.4.0), with a micro-SD card for local storage and a Particle Boron telemetry module.

The Okapi data logger responds to the need for a robust, flexible, and power-efficient open-source option to record and transmit data from remote locations. It is programmable using the open-source standard Arduino framework via a standard micro-USB cable and supports a wide range of sensor input/output options. It connects to dual power supplies to ensure consistent recordings, and interfaces with a range of “Feather”-form-factor boards for telemetry.

Project-Okapi: common questions

What microcontroller does the Project-Okapi use?

The Project-Okapi is built around the ATMEGA1284M, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Project-Okapi PCB?

The Project-Okapi measures 64.8 × 135 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Project-Okapi?

251 components, from 115 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Project-Okapi design files?

From the NorthernWidget/Project-Okapi repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Project-Okapi design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, which NorthernWidget chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Project-Okapi without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
