About the Starbie PCB

Starbie is an open source ESP32 PCB design by partofcosmos-site, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 96.6 × 82.8 mm, with 7 components from 6 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-ESP32-C3-SMD, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the DHT11. By type, the board carries 2 ICs, 2 connectors, 2 switches and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the sensors, keyboards and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

Starbie is a small desk pet that reacts to movement. Instead of using buttons to click through menus, you interact with it by tilting and shaking the board. It runs on a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-C3 and shows its face on a 0.96 inch OLED screen.

This project is built for week 1 of Half Life, an accelerator by Hack Club where you build hardware and earn a 3D printer.

Starbie: common questions

What microcontroller does the Starbie use?

The Starbie is built around the XIAO-ESP32-C3-SMD, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Starbie PCB?

The Starbie measures 96.6 × 82.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Starbie?

7 components, from 6 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Starbie design files?

From the partofcosmos-site/Starbie repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Starbie design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which partofcosmos-site chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Starbie without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
