About the Vanilla ice40-8k PCB

Vanilla ice40-8k is an open source FPGA PCB design by pbozeman, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 6-layer board measuring 100 × 62 mm, with 123 components from 33 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ICE40HX8K-CT256, from the FPGA family. Other key parts include the W25X40CLSN, FT2232HL, 93LCxxBxxOT and TPS563252DRLR. By type, the board carries 57 capacitors, 39 resistors, 6 ICs, 5 inductors, 4 connectors and 2 crystals.

It belongs with the dev boards & breakouts and usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

Hardware design and verilog sample files for Lattice ICE40 development boards and expansion boards.

Hardware design and verilog sample files for Lattice ICE40 development boards and expansion boards.

There are 2 core boards, one based on an ICE40 HX4K with 96 available IO pins, and another based on an ICE40 HX8K with 192 available IO pins.

The core boards are "vanilla" with minimal on board peripherals. Almost all IO pins are routed to mezzanine connectors. Expansion boards can be mixed and matched for different projects, while reusing the core board. The expansion boards can be daisy chained.

Vanilla ice40-8k: common questions

What microcontroller does the Vanilla ice40-8k use?

The Vanilla ice40-8k is built around the ICE40HX8K-CT256, from the FPGA family.

How big is the Vanilla ice40-8k PCB?

The Vanilla ice40-8k measures 100 × 62 mm, has 6 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Vanilla ice40-8k?

123 components, from 33 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Vanilla ice40-8k design files?

From the pbozeman/vanilla-ice40 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Vanilla ice40-8k design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which pbozeman chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Vanilla ice40-8k without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
