About the Isolated rp2040 debugger PCB

Isolated rp2040 debugger is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by peterheinrich, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 91 × 44 mm, with 63 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the C115958, ADUM3160, USB6B1, NCP1117-3.3_SOT223 and W25Q16JVSS. By type, the board carries 26 capacitors, 15 resistors, 10 ICs, 5 diodes, 2 connectors and 2 fuses.

It belongs with the usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

Like the original Raspberry Pi Pico debug probe but with an isolated PC-Interface.

An electrically isolated CMSIS-DAP debug probe based on the Raspberry Pi Debug Probe design, with full USB galvanic isolation for improved safety and robustness when debugging embedded hardware.

This project recreates the Raspberry Pi Debug Probe hardware from the published schematic and adds:

- USB full-speed isolation - ESD protection on both USB and target ports - Isolated DC/DC power for the target side - Improved protection against ground loops and high-energy faults

Isolated rp2040 debugger: common questions

What microcontroller does the Isolated rp2040 debugger use?

The Isolated rp2040 debugger is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Isolated rp2040 debugger PCB?

The Isolated rp2040 debugger measures 91 × 44 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Isolated rp2040 debugger?

63 components, from 28 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Isolated rp2040 debugger design files?

From the peterheinrich/isolated_rp2040_debugger repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Isolated rp2040 debugger design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with peterheinrich. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Isolated rp2040 debugger without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
