Raspberry Pi model train controller
A Raspberry Pi–based model train controller. Automatically runs a train between two platforms, handling acceleration/deceleration, platform stopping, track switching, and safety cutoffs — with a web dashboard for monitoring and manual control.
- Raspberry Pi 2B - Two custom PCBs for level-shifting and motor drive: - Bottom Hat: 3.3V → 5V level shifting (BC337 transistors), with a hardware SR-latch overcurrent safety circuit - Top Hat: 5V → 12V level shifting into an IRF4905 P-channel MOSFET, driving the motor directly - Sensors for slow-zone detection and platform stop detection (Platform A…

Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit: common questions
What microcontroller does the Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit use?
The Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit is built around the RASPBERRY_PI_B_2, from the Raspberry Pi family.
How big is the Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit?
The Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit measures 85.6 × 56.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit?
57 components, from 19 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit design files?
From the PetervanderMeij/train-controller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit design in my own project?
The repository has no license, so all rights stay with PetervanderMeij. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
Can I test firmware for the Bottom HAT Train Control Circuit without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
