About the Rana Tadpole V2 PCB

Rana Tadpole V2 is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by rana-sylvatica, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 172 × 107.7 mm, with 144 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the C2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the C5446, C519263, C97521, C2827693 and C2976658. By type, the board carries 51 resistors, 47 ICs, 22 switches, 19 capacitors, 3 diodes and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Pocket-sized digital controller

The Rana Tadpole is a pocket-sized 20-button digital controller, designed for platform fighters but usable for other fighting games, platformers, etc.

Unlike most other similar controller designs that use either keyboard switches or arcade buttons, the Tadpole uses mouse switches (Kailh GM 4.0 if using the provided BOM files - there are other compatible switches that can be subsituted as well at the builders discretion).

Rana Tadpole V2: common questions

What microcontroller does the Rana Tadpole V2 use?

The Rana Tadpole V2 is built around the C2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Rana Tadpole V2 PCB?

The Rana Tadpole V2 measures 172 × 107.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Rana Tadpole V2?

144 components, from 25 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Rana Tadpole V2 design files?

From the rana-sylvatica/rana-tadpole repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Rana Tadpole V2 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with rana-sylvatica. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Rana Tadpole V2 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
