About the Doom keycap hardware PCB

Doom keycap hardware is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by rsheldiii, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 32.5 × 15.5 mm, with 33 components from 21 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the NCP1117ST33T3G, W25Q128JVSIQ, 2328702-8 and MAX98357AETE+T. By type, the board carries 14 capacitors, 8 resistors, 5 ICs, 2 connectors, 2 diodes and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the keyboards, audio and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

Kicad and Fusion360 files for the Doom Keycap

Here are all the files associated with the hardware for the Doom Keycap. If you're looking for the code, it's here.

I had every intention of fabricating and selling these myself, but I got caught up on how to manufacture the keycap itself without A. breaking the bank, or B. doing a group buy before realizing my design wasn't feasible. With that, coupled with (happy) life events, I decided to open-source the hardware now.

Doom keycap hardware: common questions

What microcontroller does the Doom keycap hardware use?

The Doom keycap hardware is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Doom keycap hardware PCB?

The Doom keycap hardware measures 32.5 × 15.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Doom keycap hardware?

33 components, from 21 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Doom keycap hardware design files?

From the rsheldiii/doom-keycap-hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Doom keycap hardware design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which rsheldiii chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Doom keycap hardware without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
