About the Buran-Ortho PCB

Buran-Ortho is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by ScatteredDrifter, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 224.4 × 97.8 mm, with 100 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the NCP1117-3.3_SOT223, W25Q128JVS and SRV05-4. By type, the board carries 41 relays, 22 diodes, 15 capacitors, 7 resistors, 5 connectors and 4 ICs.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

A 39-key orthogonal keyboard with support for two knobs, based on a rp2040

For the top-part of the case there are several options available, where each of them was designed for a specific layout.

Another beautiful case is to be found here. Maybe consider it, seems to be constructed better overall.

the pre-compiled file for Vial and the whole Qmk-userspace for this keyboard can be found here

To enter the bootloader - which is necessary in order to flash a new firmware - press the button next to the encoder on the back of the pcb and plug-it into your keyboard while keeping the button pressed. It should show up as a regular usb-stick in your file explorer now and…

Buran-Ortho: common questions

What microcontroller does the Buran-Ortho use?

The Buran-Ortho is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Buran-Ortho PCB?

The Buran-Ortho measures 224.4 × 97.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Buran-Ortho?

100 components, from 24 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Buran-Ortho design files?

From the ScatteredDrifter/Buran-Ortho repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Buran-Ortho design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which ScatteredDrifter chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Buran-Ortho without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
