About the FOD PCB
FOD is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by spel-uchile, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 82.5 × 29 mm, with 35 components from 28 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the C78624, from the Microchip SAM family. Other key parts include the C460367, NRF24L01_Breakout, AV4524 and DPL. By type, the board carries 8 capacitors, 6 resistors, 5 ICs, 4 connectors, 2 diodes and 1 transistor.
It belongs with the rf & radio and science & space designs in this gallery.
From the project
Femto-satellite Orbital Deployer (FOD)
This repository contains the PCB design and the source code of a femto-satellite orbital deployer or FOD. This device works by cutting a fishing line with Nichrome wire. The fishing line is normally pressing a hinge lever. When the line is cut, the hinge lever is released end the microcontroller can detect the release status.
The PCB has a transceiver (NRF24L01) to communicate with the femto-satellite once it is released. There is also a LED showing the release status, and a reset button. The energy and the comunication with the OBC is done through a molex cable with a picoblade connector.

FOD: common questions
What microcontroller does the FOD use?
The FOD is built around the C78624, from the Microchip SAM family.
How big is the FOD PCB?
The FOD measures 82.5 × 29 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the FOD?
35 components, from 28 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the FOD design files?
From the spel-uchile/FOD repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the FOD design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which spel-uchile chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the FOD without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
