About the GameMan PCB

GameMan is an open source ESP32 PCB design by Studented0, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 90 × 150 mm, with 40 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-DEVKITC-1-N8R2, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the TP4056-42-ESOP8 and AMS1117-3.3. By type, the board carries 12 switches, 10 resistors, 8 capacitors, 3 ICs, 2 diodes and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

A handheld Game Boy emulator with a Fat form factor, tactile buttons, 3.5" display, and USB-C for both charging and loading ROMs. Built around the ESP32-S3.

The ESP32-S3 runs Peanut-GB and drives a 3.5" SPI display. ROMs live on an SD card built into the display module. , drag a ROM onto it, unplug, and play.

Battery charging goes through a TP4056. The ESP32 controls the charge enable pin in software so I can add things like charge limiting later. Battery voltage reads through a voltage divider on an ADC pin for a charge percentage estimate.

GameMan: common questions

What microcontroller does the GameMan use?

The GameMan is built around the ESP32-S3-DEVKITC-1-N8R2, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the GameMan PCB?

The GameMan measures 90 × 150 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the GameMan?

40 components, from 20 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the GameMan design files?

From the Studented0/GameMan repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the GameMan design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Studented0. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the GameMan without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
