About the Convertible keyboard PCB

Convertible keyboard is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by TechnikWeber, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-NC-4.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 431.2 × 126.4 mm, with 482 components from 37 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q16JVSSIQ, AP2112K-3.3TRG1 and USBLC6-2SC6. By type, the board carries 124 resistors, 111 diodes, 110 switches, 107 LEDs, 18 capacitors and 4 ICs.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Convertible keyboard PCB: full-size ISO-DE & ANSI with a snap-off numpad that turns it into a TKL (RP2040, USB-C, KiCad). Cheap, clean, modern core to build on — looking for a case designer.

One keyboard PCB, two sizes. A full-size ISO-DE / ANSI board whose numpad snaps off along a breakaway line. What remains is a complete tenkeyless (TKL) keyboard — same PCB, same controller, same firmware.

This is not meant to be yet another one-off DIY keyboard. The goal is a standardised core design that others can build on: cheap and simple to make, but clean and modern — current KiCad, QMK, USB-C and parts that can actually be bought. A case, lighting or layout variants build on this core instead of bending it into something else.

Convertible keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Convertible keyboard use?

The Convertible keyboard is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Convertible keyboard PCB?

The Convertible keyboard measures 431.2 × 126.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Convertible keyboard?

482 components, from 37 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Convertible keyboard design files?

From the TechnikWeber/convertible-keyboard-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Convertible keyboard design in my own project?

It is published under CC-BY-NC-4.0, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Convertible keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
