About the TMC-LZ210-Command-Station PCB

TMC-LZ210-Command-Station is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by tmc-digiboys, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 180 × 90 mm, with 110 components from 74 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RASPBERRYPI_PICO2_MODULE-RP2350B-XXL-OLIMEX, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the LM4040LP-3, 5V Step down Module, 12V Step down Module, MODULE-W5500 and MAX3485. By type, the board carries 47 resistors, 22 connectors, 12 capacitors, 10 ICs, 9 diodes and 6 transistors.

It belongs with the robotics & motion designs in this gallery, and the repository also holds 1 earlier revision of it.

From the project

Printed Circuit Board for the TMC-LZ210

Modular DCC command station with Ethernet and USB connectivity, and (partial) support for the XpressNet and Z21 protocols. The board supports LocoNet-T and XpressNet handhelds and other equipment, provides an interface for external boosters via CDE and LocoNet-B, and has a connection for RS-Bus feedback modules.

The starting point is a modular design, similar to the Z21PG. Initially we looked at whether we could simply adapt or replicate this design. We quickly realised that upgrading to a modern processor and ready-made modules would lead to better results and a lower price.

TMC-LZ210-Command-Station: common questions

What microcontroller does the TMC-LZ210-Command-Station use?

The TMC-LZ210-Command-Station is built around the RASPBERRYPI_PICO2_MODULE-RP2350B-XXL-OLIMEX, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the TMC-LZ210-Command-Station PCB?

The TMC-LZ210-Command-Station measures 180 × 90 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the TMC-LZ210-Command-Station?

110 components, from 74 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the TMC-LZ210-Command-Station design files?

From the tmc-digiboys/TMC-LZ210-Command-Station-PCB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the TMC-LZ210-Command-Station design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which tmc-digiboys chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the TMC-LZ210-Command-Station without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
