From the project

turn your phone into a robot running SLAM with two motors, two control boards, and a bluetooth chip

Mobile phones and mobile robots have many common requirements:

- performant sensors (cameras, IMUs, LiDAR, GPS) and sensor fusion - networking capabilities (WiFi, Bluetooth Low Energy, LTE) - energy efficiency

What if we turned the iPhone into a robot?

- exposes the core sensor data through iOS APIs - Camera - LiDAR (iPhone Pro 12+) - IMU - runs WASM bytecode using statically compiled WAMR iwasm - communicates with ESP32 over BLE to control motors

Roamr motors: common questions

What microcontroller does the Roamr motors use?

The Roamr motors is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Roamr motors PCB?

The Roamr motors measures 115 × 55 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6062 mm thick.

How many components are on the Roamr motors?

96 components, from 38 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Roamr motors design files?

From the uw-roamr/roamr repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Roamr motors design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with uw-roamr. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Roamr motors without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
