About the KBoard PCB

KBoard is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by YakshithK, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 306 × 125 mm, with 199 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q16JVSS, XC6206 and ESD. By type, the board carries 85 switches, 84 diodes, 17 capacitors, 6 resistors, 4 ICs and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

An 84-key custom mechanical keyboard built from scratch around the RP2040. No dev module: the RP2040, flash, regulator, USB-C, crystal, and support circuitry are all on the board. Uses Cherry MX Browns.

The PCB is a basic 2-layer pcb (306 x 125 mm) using an RP2040 SoC with a USB-C connector. There's also a switch broken on the bottom for boot/reset.

Build the firmware with qmk compile -kb kboard -km default (the firmware/kboard folder must be linked or copied to qmkfirmware/keyboards/kboard). Flash the resulting UF2, also bundled at production/firmware/kboarddefault.uf2, by double-pressing…

KBoard: common questions

What microcontroller does the KBoard use?

The KBoard is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the KBoard PCB?

The KBoard measures 306 × 125 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the KBoard?

199 components, from 17 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the KBoard design files?

From the YakshithK/KBoard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the KBoard design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with YakshithK. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the KBoard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
