Burst (fast serial) capable cartridge for Commodore C16/116/Plus4

This Plus/4 cartridge implements both fast serial burst for 1570/1571/1581 drives and a parallel connection for the 1541 drive, enabling high-speed data transfers.

The project started as a response to a question from Plus/4 World Forum.

In order to use the Burst (fast serial) protocol as implemented on the C128, we need a bidirectional hardware serial port.

The published version uses VIA 6522 chips, which are still relatively easy to obtain. The additional logic addresses a VIA hardware bug that can lead to framing errors and lost bits when the serial port is externally clocked, as is the…

Burstcart: common questions

What microcontroller does the Burstcart use?

The Burstcart is built around the ATtiny85-20P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Burstcart PCB?

The Burstcart measures 56 × 91 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Burstcart?

21 components, from 14 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Burstcart design files?

From the ytmytm/plus4-burstcart repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Burstcart design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with ytmytm. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Burstcart without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
