About the Rainbow music pegasus PCB

Rainbow music pegasus is an open source ESP32 PCB design by adamm, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 151 × 31 mm, with 96 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C3-MINI-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the OPA2322, TLV75533PDBV, MCP73831-2-OT and MCP41050. By type, the board carries 42 capacitors, 26 diodes, 17 resistors, 5 ICs, 2 connectors and 2 switches.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, power & battery and audio designs in this gallery.

Disclaimer: This work is a work-in-progress. This project is still under active development and is estimated to be completed Spring 2027. What you see here is code that is largely incomplete, buggy, probably crashes, and could catch fire. The PCB board is largely inefficient, expensive, probably broken, and could catch fire.

Version 1 of the rainbow-music-pegasus was completed March 2024. A few test units were sold at Breyer West show, but were never mass produced. v1 lacks wifi, bluetooth, and battery support.

Rainbow music pegasus: common questions

What microcontroller does the Rainbow music pegasus use?

The Rainbow music pegasus is built around the ESP32-C3-MINI-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Rainbow music pegasus PCB?

The Rainbow music pegasus measures 151 × 31 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Rainbow music pegasus?

96 components, from 28 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Rainbow music pegasus design files?

From the adamm/rainbow-music-pegasus repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Rainbow music pegasus design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which adamm chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Rainbow music pegasus without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
