About the Starman PCB

Starman is an open source ESP32 PCB design by adamm, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 182 × 150 mm, with 241 components from 36 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-MINI-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the LED1642GWTTR, AZ1084CS2-ADJ, BA33BC0FP-E2 and PAM8302AAS. By type, the board carries 145 diodes, 38 capacitors, 24 resistors, 13 ICs, 12 connectors and 3 crystals.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, displays & leds and audio designs in this gallery.

Disclaimer: This work is a work-in-progress. While this project is still under active development, version 2.1 was released December 1st, 2022. What you see here is code that is largely incomplete, buggy, crashes, and could catch fire. The PCB board is largely inefficient, expensive, broken, and could catch fire.

Version 1 of the star is a POC I created a few years ago which was literally a 3d-printed star with 24 LEDs hot-glued onto it, driven by a LED PWM module from Adafruit, 3 PWM channels for audio, running from an Arduino Uno.

Starman: common questions

What microcontroller does the Starman use?

The Starman is built around the ESP32-S3-MINI-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Starman PCB?

The Starman measures 182 × 150 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Starman?

241 components, from 36 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Starman design files?

From the adamm/starman repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Starman design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Starman without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
