About the SAO Demo Controller PCB

SAO Demo Controller is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by ageppert, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 38.1 × 50.8 mm, with 50 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040-Zero, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the RY2201, TP4054, LM66100DCK, TPS61200DRC and INA180A2. By type, the board carries 20 resistors, 10 ICs, 7 capacitors, 4 crystals, 2 connectors and 1 switch.

From the project

A small inline SAO with an RP2040 used to demo SAOs that require smarts, but don't have it built-in.

A Microcontroller for your smarter-than-average SAO!

The SAO Demo Controller makes it convenient to bring life to your advanced I2C-based SAO! Use this to test and demonstrate your new design even when your host badge isn't ready to control the SAO. Maybe this is better referred to as a micro badge for developing SAOs.

CAUTION: Do not plug this into your host badge and USB-C at the same time!!!

SAO Demo Controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the SAO Demo Controller use?

The SAO Demo Controller is built around the RP2040-Zero, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the SAO Demo Controller PCB?

The SAO Demo Controller measures 38.1 × 50.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SAO Demo Controller?

50 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SAO Demo Controller design files?

From the ageppert/SAO_Demo_Controller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SAO Demo Controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which ageppert chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the SAO Demo Controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
