About the Atari GTIA Adapter PCB

Atari GTIA Adapter is an open source FPGA PCB design by c0pperdragon, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 25.4 × 52.1 mm, with 14 components from 8 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the 10M02SCE144, from the FPGA family. Other key parts include the SN74LVC14ADBR. By type, the board carries 6 capacitors, 5 ICs, 2 connectors and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the displays & leds and retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

FPGA board to create a component video signal for vintage computers.

Built on the A-Video board, this is a modification usable for Atari 8-bit computers that generate YPbPr signal in either 288p or 576p to display on modern displays.

These old Atari computers generate the colour output signal directly in the weird way that was necessary to construct a PAL or NTSC signal. The technique is called "quadrature amplitude modulation" and has the disadvantage of not being completely reversible, so the original colours can not be reconstructed from this signal. Even worse, the XL line of machines does not even provide this signal directly on the video output, but…

Atari GTIA Adapter: common questions

What microcontroller does the Atari GTIA Adapter use?

The Atari GTIA Adapter is built around the 10M02SCE144, from the FPGA family.

How big is the Atari GTIA Adapter PCB?

The Atari GTIA Adapter measures 25.4 × 52.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Atari GTIA Adapter?

14 components, from 8 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Atari GTIA Adapter design files?

From the c0pperdragon/A-VideoBoard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Atari GTIA Adapter design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which c0pperdragon chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Atari GTIA Adapter without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
