About the C64board PCB

C64board is an open source FPGA PCB design by c0pperdragon, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 24.4 × 53.3 mm, with 12 components from 8 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the 10M02SCE144, from the FPGA family. Other key parts include the VIC-II, LVC257 and LVC245. By type, the board carries 5 ICs, 5 capacitors, 1 connector and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the retro computing and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

FPGA board to create a component video signal for vintage computers.

Built on the A-Video board, this is a modification usable for the Commodore 64 computer that generates a YPbPr signal in either 288p or 576p to display on modern displays.

I wanted to get the most perfect display from an original C64 computer. After many failed attempts to reconstruct a digitally perfect pixel-by-pixel display from the S-Video output, I finally came back to my original idea to emulate the inner workings of the VIC-II chip. So, as for the atari 8-bit line and the ZX Spectrum, I applied my trusty A-Video board.

C64board: common questions

What microcontroller does the C64board use?

The C64board is built around the 10M02SCE144, from the FPGA family.

How big is the C64board PCB?

The C64board measures 24.4 × 53.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the C64board?

12 components, from 8 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the C64board design files?

From the c0pperdragon/A-VideoBoard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the C64board design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which c0pperdragon chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the C64board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
