About the RP2040-designguide PCB

RP2040-designguide is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by calliah333, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 45.2 × 93.4 mm, with 31 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q128JVS, USBLC6-2SC6 and XC6206PxxxMR-Regulator_Linear. By type, the board carries 17 capacitors, 7 resistors, 4 ICs, 1 crystal, 1 connector and 1 fuse.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

Hardware design for the RP2040

This guide requires you to have prerequisite knowledge about PCB design and a little about the RP2040. This is not a guide for absolute beginners and should not be treated as one.

I have multiple tested and working boards using the RP2040, including an open source one you can find here!

Bit of a disclaimer: I have mostly switched from RP2040 over to STM32F072 due to a few reasons. Mostly component cost and the amount of parts necessary, as well as overall stability. I have a tested and OSH f072 PCBs available on github. Namely here, here, and here. Designing with f072 is generally easier as…

RP2040-designguide: common questions

What microcontroller does the RP2040-designguide use?

The RP2040-designguide is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the RP2040-designguide PCB?

The RP2040-designguide measures 45.2 × 93.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the RP2040-designguide?

31 components, from 14 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the RP2040-designguide design files?

From the calliah333/RP2040-designguide repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the RP2040-designguide design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which calliah333 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the RP2040-designguide without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
