About the Free Flier PCB

Free Flier is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by danielwilczak101, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 40.9 × 28.7 mm, with 19 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATmega328P-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the DMN4026SSD and LM78M05CDTX/NOPB. By type, the board carries 5 capacitors, 4 connectors, 3 ICs, 3 resistors, 2 diodes and 1 crystal.

From the project

Originally part of the NASA Asteroid flyer program has been repurposed by the EPPL to allow anyone interested in controls to go online and connect with a real working device and test their own control algorithms on a live device that is connected to the global internet.

Originally part of the NASA Asteroid flyer program has been repurposed by the EPPL to allow anyone interested in controls to go online and connect with a real working device and test their own control algorithms on a live device that is connected to the global internet. The spacecraft has been refitted with new and improved wiring, updated computers and a website that allows for members to connect and upload code to.

Free Flier: common questions

What microcontroller does the Free Flier use?

The Free Flier is built around the ATmega328P-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Free Flier PCB?

The Free Flier measures 40.9 × 28.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Free Flier?

19 components, from 15 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Free Flier design files?

From the danielwilczak101/EasyControls repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Free Flier design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with danielwilczak101. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Free Flier without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
