About the Controller PCB

Controller is an open source ESP32 PCB design by deltaphi, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 35 × 124 mm, with 54 components from 29 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the 4044, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the 4014, CH340C and XM1584. By type, the board carries 20 resistors, 13 capacitors, 9 switches, 5 ICs, 5 connectors and 2 diodes.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

Sketch for a Switchboard talking the CAN CS2 protocol based on the ESP32 NodeMCU-Board

This project is built using PlatformIO. It makes use of some features that may not be easily portable to other Arduino-supported MCUs.

This project makes use of several libraries. Versioned links to those libraries are available as git submodules. Note that for seom libraries, using forks from the same source as this project may be required.

Note that the CAN driver from the lib directory must not be present when you want to compile using the ESP32-IDF driver. Otherwise, the Controller will just attempt to sit there without sending queued messages or receiving any messages transmitted on…

Controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Controller use?

The Controller is built around the 4044, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Controller PCB?

The Controller measures 35 × 124 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Controller?

54 components, from 29 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Controller design files?

From the deltaphi/RR32CanController repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which deltaphi chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
