About the Panel PCB

Panel is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by dj505, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 80 components from 33 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q32JVSS, NCP1117-3.3_SOT223 and SP3485EN. By type, the board carries 27 diodes, 17 capacitors, 14 connectors, 13 resistors, 4 ICs and 2 switches.

A PIU pad lighting upgrade kit, featuring a 5x5 RGB LED grid

There are 2 PCB designs being worked on for this project: The main "Panel" PCB Contains all the LEDs, with individual microcontrollers per PCB, ensuring they can all work individually. Fully tested, with updated design/gerber files that hardware issues I initially ran into while prototyping. The power distrubution PCB Takes a barrel jack and/or bare wires via screw terminals. 5V input only! Make sure your power supply can pump out enough amps to power all the LEDs. 5 outputs, one per arrow on one pad. In the case of DDR/ITG pads, one may be left unused. Also includes footprints for filtering…

Panel: common questions

What microcontroller does the Panel use?

The Panel is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Panel PCB?

The Panel measures 100 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Panel?

80 components, from 33 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Panel design files?

From the dj505/Pad-Light-Kit repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Panel design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dj505. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Panel without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
