About the Black Body Heater Control PCB

Black Body Heater Control is an open source ESP32 PCB design by DylanLockyer, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 57.5 × 42.8 mm, with 49 components from 29 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8R8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3, USBLC6-2SC6, DAC60501ZDGSR, INA181A2IDBVR and TPSM84209RKHR. By type, the board carries 19 resistors, 13 capacitors, 7 ICs, 4 connectors, 3 diodes and 2 switches.

It belongs with the test & measurement, iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Electrical system for black body MKID tester

Two-layer circuit board carrying the ESP32 microcontroller and all heater control electronics: current source, voltage/current sensing, and power supply. See the firmware README for how this board is driven, and the root README for overall project context.

Schematic: BlackBodyHeaterControlSchematic.pdf

The original design used an N-channel MOSFET with PWM to control heater voltage. Due to concerns about PWM noise interfering with the sensor board's measurements, this was replaced with an analog current source instead.

Black Body Heater Control: common questions

What microcontroller does the Black Body Heater Control use?

The Black Body Heater Control is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8R8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Black Body Heater Control PCB?

The Black Body Heater Control measures 57.5 × 42.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Black Body Heater Control?

49 components, from 29 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Black Body Heater Control design files?

From the DylanLockyer/Black_Body repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Black Body Heater Control design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which DylanLockyer chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Black Body Heater Control without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
