About the D6-candidate PCB

D6-candidate is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by EthanKahn08, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 55 × 30 mm, with 60 components from 26 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q16JVSSIQ, TLV1117LV33DCYR, TPS22918DBVR and 74LVC125APW. By type, the board carries 23 capacitors, 21 resistors, 6 diodes, 5 ICs, 2 connectors and 2 switches.

From the project

Design-stage RP2040 USB-C microSD reader: KiCad hardware, verification evidence, UART bring-up firmware, and assembly plan. Unbuilt and untested.

A custom RP2040 board intended to expose a removable microSD card as a USB drive. It uses 2 MiB external firmware flash, a 12 MHz crystal, USB-C, and a switched SPI card interface.

Status: design stage. No board has been assembled or bench tested. Hardware file checks pass. UART bring-up firmware is included; SD and USB Mass Storage firmware still need implementation.

D6-candidate: common questions

What microcontroller does the D6-candidate use?

The D6-candidate is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the D6-candidate PCB?

The D6-candidate measures 55 × 30 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the D6-candidate?

60 components, from 26 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the D6-candidate design files?

From the EthanKahn08/example-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the D6-candidate design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with EthanKahn08. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the D6-candidate without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
