I wanted an electric bike with a more dynamic feel than the typical e-bike; one in which you wouldn’t be able to get away with constantly cruising at 30km/h with minimal effort. I wanted an e-bike that had a sense of “sportyness”, quick, instantaneous acceleration. I also wanted the sence of scarcity. The goal was to have an e-bike that could get me up a hill, yet had limited capacity, such that it still enticed me to get some proper exercise. A super-capacitor based accumulator is perfect for this, as they have reduced charge density, and generally are able to source and sink signifigantly…

The-SuperCap-Bike-Project: common questions

What microcontroller does the The-SuperCap-Bike-Project use?

The The-SuperCap-Bike-Project is built around the ATmega328-P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the The-SuperCap-Bike-Project PCB?

The The-SuperCap-Bike-Project measures 110.5 × 119.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the The-SuperCap-Bike-Project?

119 components, from 41 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the The-SuperCap-Bike-Project design files?

From the Fischer-Andrew/The-SuperCap-Bike-Project repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the The-SuperCap-Bike-Project design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC0-1.0 license, which Fischer-Andrew chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the The-SuperCap-Bike-Project without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
