About the Capacitor leakage tester PCB

Capacitor leakage tester is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by Fyfar, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 100 × 67.5 mm, with 61 components from 39 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040-ZERO, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-5, XL6007 and AD8605. By type, the board carries 23 resistors, 12 capacitors, 7 diodes, 6 transistors, 4 ICs and 3 connectors.

It belongs with the test & measurement and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

A fun, DIY project to build a high-sensitivity capacitor leakage current meter. This device is a great way to learn about electronics and build a useful tool for your workbench. It's not a professional-grade instrument, but it's perfect for hobbyists who want to explore the inner workings of capacitors and test their quality.

A DIY high-sensitivity capacitor leakage current meter. Applies a selectable test voltage to a capacitor under test and measures the resulting leakage current down to the microamp range.

KiCAD schematic and PCB files are in the kicad/ directory.

Built with PlatformIO and the Arduino framework (Earle Philhower RP2040 core).

Capacitor leakage tester: common questions

What microcontroller does the Capacitor leakage tester use?

The Capacitor leakage tester is built around the RP2040-ZERO, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Capacitor leakage tester PCB?

The Capacitor leakage tester measures 100 × 67.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Capacitor leakage tester?

61 components, from 39 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Capacitor leakage tester design files?

From the Fyfar/capacitor_leakage_tester repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Capacitor leakage tester design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which Fyfar chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Capacitor leakage tester without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
