Open Source Theremin Instrument, Shield PCB and Hardware description

Schematics, printed circuit board (PCB) design, bill of materials (BOM) for the Open.Theremin.V3 arduino shield. For software see separate git repository.

Open.Theremin.V3 is an arduino shield to build the legendary music instrument invented by Leon Theremin back in 1920. The theremin is played with two antennas, one to control the pitch and one for volume. The electronic shield with two ports to connect those antennas comprises two heterodyne oscillators to measure the distance of the hand to the antenna when playing the instrument. The resulting signal is fed into the arduino. After…

OpenTheremin V3 Shield: common questions

What microcontroller does the OpenTheremin V3 Shield use?

The OpenTheremin V3 Shield is built around the Arduino_UNO_R2, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the OpenTheremin V3 Shield?

The OpenTheremin V3 Shield measures 60 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the OpenTheremin V3 Shield?

84 components, from 43 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the OpenTheremin V3 Shield design files?

From the GaudiLabs/OpenTheremin_V3_Shield repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the OpenTheremin V3 Shield design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which GaudiLabs chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the OpenTheremin V3 Shield without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
