About the HexGateway PCB

HexGateway is an open source ESP32 PCB design by gblach, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 50 × 48 mm, with 83 components from 43 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the esp32-c3, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the nRF52840, LM1117-3.3, SN74LV1T34DBV, MX25R3235FM2xx1 and ENC28J60x-SS. By type, the board carries 45 capacitors, 13 resistors, 6 ICs, 6 connectors, 6 inductors and 4 crystals.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

An internet gateway for Bluetooth LE, OpenThread and/or Zigbee devices.

It employs three chips: - nrf52840 - has support for Bluetooth LE, OpenThread and Zigbee networks. - esp32-c3 - has support for WiFi at 2.4GHz. - enc28j60 - has support for Ethernet network.

Note that U102 is required only if your are using esp32-c3 (U101) without built-in flash memory.

esp32-c3 (U101) can be programmed using ESP-Prog. This programmer must be connected to J101 (TagConnect) or J102 (IDC 6) connector.

HexGateway: common questions

What microcontroller does the HexGateway use?

The HexGateway is built around the esp32-c3, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the HexGateway PCB?

The HexGateway measures 50 × 48 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the HexGateway?

83 components, from 43 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the HexGateway design files?

From the gblach/HexGateway repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the HexGateway design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with gblach. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the HexGateway without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
