Unofficial badge for KiCon 2020 Virtual Edition. (From: Thomas Flummer / KiCon 2020 Virtual Badge Template)

Based off the design+template by Thomas Flummer

I was inspired by the design Thomas made, and wanted to try and extend the badge with more LEDs. I'm using a similar architecture to the LED panels on the d20 and small LED cube I built, except this only has 1 colour of LED in the Matrix.

I've not coded up firmware for a display like this with a microcontroller before, and I've had trouble with the SAMD21's DMA controller and cyclic descriptors in the past. The display will require constant attention from the SAMD as it is a multiplexed display, I'm hoping that implementing a framebuffer +…

Kicon-2020-virtual badge: common questions

What microcontroller does the Kicon-2020-virtual badge use?

The Kicon-2020-virtual badge is built around the ATSAMD21G16L-MNT, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the Kicon-2020-virtual badge PCB?

The Kicon-2020-virtual badge measures 100 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Kicon-2020-virtual badge?

600 components, from 56 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Kicon-2020-virtual badge design files?

From the gregdavill/kicon-2020-virtual-badge repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Kicon-2020-virtual badge design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, which gregdavill chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Kicon-2020-virtual badge without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
