About the Gs PCB

Gs is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by Horizon-Avionics, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 76 × 35 mm, with 37 components from 26 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATSAMD21G18A-A, from the Microchip SAM family. Other key parts include the SX1262IMLTRT, AMS1117-3.3 and PE4259. By type, the board carries 17 capacitors, 6 resistors, 4 ICs, 4 connectors, 3 inductors and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the rf & radio and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

Building a fully open-source flight computer for amateur rocketry!

The Goal of Horizon Avionics is to be able to build a full-fledged, and open-source flight computer for amateur rocketry. There is no such board online, and we are hoping for this board to streamline open-sourcing products instead of charging upwards of $400 for a ~$130 board.

- This whole board including antennas are under $150 USD.

- GPS for navigation of where the rocket landed and it's flight path.

Gs: common questions

What microcontroller does the Gs use?

The Gs is built around the ATSAMD21G18A-A, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the Gs PCB?

The Gs measures 76 × 35 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Gs?

37 components, from 26 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Gs design files?

From the Horizon-Avionics/Horizon-H1 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Gs design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Horizon-Avionics. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Gs without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
