About the ESP32CanBoard PCB

ESP32CanBoard is an open source ESP32 PCB design by ieb, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 73.2 × 69.1 mm, with 30 components from 19 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32Dev, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the 6N137, DCDCConverter and TJA1050. By type, the board carries 7 capacitors, 6 connectors, 5 ICs, 5 diodes and 5 resistors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Exposes NMEA2000 and BMS data over BLE for Apps to use. Also supports Wifi/http/tcp/udp services.

There are 2 variant, one for an ESP32 WROOM board and one for ESP32-C3 boards. 2 PCBs for the later one using the 18n pin waveshare module and the other using a generic 16 pin module from ebay.

The BMS serial is isolated with a pair of 6N137s as 0v of the BMS will likely not be 0V of the Canbus due to current flowing from the battery pack. The device is powered from the canbus which is driven through a TJ1050. The preferred board is one of the ESP32-C3 boards which are more compact and better designed.

ESP32CanBoard: common questions

What microcontroller does the ESP32CanBoard use?

The ESP32CanBoard is built around the ESP32Dev, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the ESP32CanBoard PCB?

The ESP32CanBoard measures 73.2 × 69.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ESP32CanBoard?

30 components, from 19 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ESP32CanBoard design files?

From the ieb/N2KNMEA0183Wifi repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ESP32CanBoard design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with ieb. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the ESP32CanBoard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
