Soilchord is a novel geotechnical instrument that turns a vertical column of soil into a musical instrument — and then listens to it. Inside a slim, waterproof probe are several taut steel wires ("chords"), each anchored at a different depth. A small solenoid actuator plucks each chord on a schedule, and a piezoelectric pickup captures the resulting resonance. The fundamental frequency, harmonic series, and ring-down decay (Q-factor) of each chord are exquisitely sensitive to the…

Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler: common questions

What microcontroller does the Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler use?

The Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler is built around the STM32L432KCU6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler PCB?

The Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler measures 100 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler?

6 components, from 6 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler design files?

From the jayis1/hardware-design-lab repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with jayis1. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Soilchord — Geotechnical Acoustic Soil Profiler without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
