About the Pollen scout PCB

Pollen scout is an open source ESP32 PCB design by jayis1, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 80 × 55 mm, with 10 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C3, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the STM32H743VIT6, SX1262, BQ25895, BME280 and SI1145. By type, the board carries 6 ICs, 2 capacitors and 2 resistors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, power & battery and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

Full-cycle hardware device designs — each device in its own subfolder with architecture, schematics, PCB layout, and software stack

Pollen Scout is a novel environmental sensing platform that combines optical microscopy imaging of airborne particles with on-device convolutional neural network (CNN) classification to identify pollen taxa (grasses, trees, weeds, molds) and aerosol classes down to the genus level — without sending raw images to the cloud. It augments classification with micrometeorological sensors (wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, UV) and runs a lightweight spatiotemporal forecasting model to predict local pollen concentrations 1–72 hours ahead. Designed for vineyards, orchards, allergy clinics…

Pollen scout: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pollen scout use?

The Pollen scout is built around the ESP32-C3, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Pollen scout PCB?

The Pollen scout measures 80 × 55 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pollen scout?

10 components, from 10 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pollen scout design files?

From the jayis1/hardware-design-lab repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pollen scout design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with jayis1. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pollen scout without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
