About the Terrarium Control Board

Terrarium Control Board is an open source ESP32 PCB design by justbuchanan, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 140 × 140 mm, with 51 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02-N4, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the SHT30-DIS, IX4427N and LMR54406DBVR. By type, the board carries 14 resistors, 6 capacitors, 5 diodes, 4 ICs, 2 transistors and 2 connectors.

3d-printed smart terrarium

This project uses a plugin for laying out components. Some values are defined in /oasis_constants.py, then used in both the CAD model and the PCB layout.

The plugin is located at https://github.com/justbuchanan/kicadcomponentlayout/blob/versionfix/componentlayoutplugin.py and must be copied into Kicad's plugin directory in order to use it.

- run pcb/{main, ledboard}/layout.py, which generates a layout.yaml output.

Terrarium Control Board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Terrarium Control Board use?

The Terrarium Control Board is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02-N4, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Terrarium Control Board?

The Terrarium Control Board measures 140 × 140 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Terrarium Control Board?

51 components, from 28 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Terrarium Control Board design files?

From the justbuchanan/oasis repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Terrarium Control Board design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which justbuchanan chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Terrarium Control Board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
