About the Ir remote PCB

Ir remote is an open source ESP32 PCB design by Koontzie, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 30 × 58 mm, with 42 components from 32 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the HT7833, MCP73831-2-OT and USBLC6-2SC6. By type, the board carries 14 resistors, 10 capacitors, 7 switches, 4 ICs, 3 diodes and 2 transistors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

ESP-32 Simple Universal Remote

KiCad 10 project for the custom board. Design decisions and rationale live in DESIGN-pcb.md; this file is the how-to-work-on-it notes.

Nothing here has been fabricated. Nothing is proven.

KiCad 10 (board format 20260206) references nets by name:

kicad-cli --save-board — KiCad's own serialiser — writes the name-only form, and DRC resolves it correctly (Pad 5 [BTN1], Track [BTN1]). The kicad-mcp writer produces the same thing, correctly.

Ir remote: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ir remote use?

The Ir remote is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Ir remote PCB?

The Ir remote measures 30 × 58 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Ir remote?

42 components, from 32 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ir remote design files?

From the Koontzie/ir-remote repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ir remote design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which Koontzie chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Ir remote without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
