About the Control PCB

Control is an open source ESP32 PCB design by kramerbastian, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 94.6 × 88.4 mm, with 65 components from 19 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3, TCAN332D, PCF8574T and 74HC595. By type, the board carries 28 resistors, 14 connectors, 12 capacitors, 8 ICs and 3 switches.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

stellwerk is a framework for creating custom model railway control panels from scratch.

stellwerk is a framework for creating custom model railway control panels from scratch. It includes a custom-designed control PCB with over 50 inputs and outputs, supporting both LCC and USB connectivity. The project also provides a guide for designing your own control panel layouts using UV-printed aluminum PCBs.

After designing and building a custom model railway throttle from scratch about six months ago, I wanted to bring that same analogue feel to controlling not just locomotives, but also accessories like turnouts. Physically flipping switches to change a turnout’s position is just far…

Control: common questions

What microcontroller does the Control use?

The Control is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Control PCB?

The Control measures 94.6 × 88.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Control?

65 components, from 19 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Control design files?

From the kramerbastian/stellwerk repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Control design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with kramerbastian. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Control without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
