RP2040-based DEF CON silent disco badge — KiCad project + tooling

A wearable silent disco. Every badge plays DJ mixes from its own memory card to your headphones, runs a light show that matches the music, and can sync to a friend's badge over infrared — same song, same moment, lights flashing together.

1. Flip the power switch. Plug headphones into the top jack. 2. It starts playing where it last left off.

Syncing: press SYNC — your music pauses and the badge listens for up to ~25 seconds. Touch your badge's jagged edge into your friend's (they interlock — that's what the teeth are for) and it will pick up their broadcast, jump to their channel at their…

Defcon badge: common questions

What microcontroller does the Defcon badge use?

The Defcon badge is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Defcon badge PCB?

The Defcon badge measures 88 × 54 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Defcon badge?

76 components, from 42 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Defcon badge design files?

From the LastZactionHero/defcon-silent-disco repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Defcon badge design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which LastZactionHero chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Defcon badge without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
