About the Meshthingy PCB

Meshthingy is an open source ESP32 PCB design by luthfai, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 71 × 46 mm, with 76 components from 36 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the DM-OLED096-636, ATGM336H-5N71, TPS62046DGQR, HT-RA62-HF and TMHU26. By type, the board carries 24 resistors, 23 capacitors, 10 ICs, 8 diodes, 4 transistors and 4 connectors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, rf & radio and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Phones stop working the moment you leave coverage. meshthingy doesn't need coverage — it is the network.

Phones stop working the moment you leave coverage. meshthingy doesn't need coverage — it is the network.

Each board is one node in a self-healing Meshtastic mesh. Nodes talk directly to each other over licence-free LoRa radio, and every node automatically relays traffic for its neighbours. Two units give you a private long-range walkie-talkie for text; a handful scattered across a valley, a campsite, a ridgeline, or a city block give everyone in that area a shared messaging network that keeps working when nothing else does.

Meshthingy: common questions

What microcontroller does the Meshthingy use?

The Meshthingy is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Meshthingy PCB?

The Meshthingy measures 71 × 46 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Meshthingy?

76 components, from 36 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Meshthingy design files?

From the luthfai/meshthingy repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Meshthingy design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with luthfai. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Meshthingy without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
