About the IR Hub PCB

IR Hub is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by madhukartemba, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 79 × 79 mm, with 88 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family. Other key parts include the DRV2605LDGS. By type, the board carries 30 diodes, 25 resistors, 11 capacitors, 9 LEDs, 1 IC and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

An IoT device which can transmit and receive IR signals. Used to control appliances through alexa.

A self-contained, open-source smart IR universal remote built around the ESP8266. IR Hub learns the codes from your existing TV/AC/audio remotes, stores them locally, and lets you fire them from a physical button, an on-device menu, Home Assistant (MQTT), or Alexa — all over your home Wi-Fi.

It ships as a complete hardware + firmware project: custom KiCad PCB, 3D-printed enclosure, and PlatformIO firmware with OTA updates.

IR Hub: common questions

What microcontroller does the IR Hub use?

The IR Hub is built around the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the IR Hub PCB?

The IR Hub measures 79 × 79 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the IR Hub?

88 components, from 28 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the IR Hub design files?

From the madhukartemba/ir_hub repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the IR Hub design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with madhukartemba. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the IR Hub without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
