About the Wattplot PCB

Wattplot is an open source ESP32 PCB design by mokahlo, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 80 × 60 mm, with 42 components from 31 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MP1584EN, AMS1117-3.3, USBLC6-2P6, DRV8871 (ACT) and DRV8871 (SOL). By type, the board carries 11 capacitors, 11 resistors, 8 ICs, 8 connectors, 2 switches and 1 diode.

It belongs with the power & battery and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

DIY 8x3.7 ft planter with adjustable-tilt bifacial solar canopy. Parametric 3D model + sun sim + ASCE 7-22 wind load + smart-folding controller, all driven by a single parameter file.

Status: design in progress (KiCad 10.0, installing) Goal: integrate every wattplot subsystem onto one 2-layer board. No breakout boards. ~$30-50 in PCBs + assembly for 5 boards at JLCPCB. Replaces: v1 block diagram in analysis/pcbschematic.py` (which was ESP32-WROOM-32E based and didn't include the INA219s, DS18B20s, or the 2nd DRV8871 that the current wattplot actually uses).

Wattplot: common questions

What microcontroller does the Wattplot use?

The Wattplot is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Wattplot PCB?

The Wattplot measures 80 × 60 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Wattplot?

42 components, from 31 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Wattplot design files?

From the mokahlo/wattplot repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Wattplot design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which mokahlo chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Wattplot without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
