About the Rp2040 mwtrackball PCB

Rp2040 mwtrackball is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by monroewilliams, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 46 × 34 mm, with 45 components from 29 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the AP2112K-3.3TRG1 and W25Q128JVS. By type, the board carries 17 capacitors, 13 connectors, 7 resistors, 3 ICs, 2 switches and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the displays & leds, sensors and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

From the project

RP2040-based main board for my trackball design, based on the Minimal-KiCAD v2 sample from RPI

This work is based on version 2 of the "rp2040 Minimal KiCad" sample provided by the Raspberry Pi foundation here.

It is inspired by (although not directly based on) jfedor2's excellent RP2040+PMW3360 board. (Although I did borrow the USB header pinout directly from that project.)

I've modified it for the specific needs of my trackball design, with a few other additions that may make it useful for other experimentation as well. I intend it to pair with a breakout board design with matching JST plugs so that off-the-shelf cables can be used for assembly (instead of the hand-built sensor…

Rp2040 mwtrackball: common questions

What microcontroller does the Rp2040 mwtrackball use?

The Rp2040 mwtrackball is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Rp2040 mwtrackball PCB?

The Rp2040 mwtrackball measures 46 × 34 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1 mm thick.

How many components are on the Rp2040 mwtrackball?

45 components, from 29 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Rp2040 mwtrackball design files?

From the monroewilliams/rp2040_mwtrackball repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Rp2040 mwtrackball design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with monroewilliams. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Rp2040 mwtrackball without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
