About the Morphcpu PCB

Morphcpu is an open source FPGA PCB design by ranveerlabs, published on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 70 × 70 mm, with 80 components from 23 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ICE40UP5K-SG48I, from the FPGA family. Other key parts include the FT231XS-R, W25Q32JVSSIQ, AP2112K-3.3TRG1, ME6211C12M5G-N and USBLC6-2SC6. By type, the board carries 30 resistors, 21 capacitors, 17 diodes, 6 ICs, 2 inductors and 1 crystal.

From the project

KiCad project for the 4-layer board. It is placed and routed.

Start with DESIGN.md, then see ROUTING.md for the routing details.

The latest DRC run had 0 violations, 0 unconnected items and 0 schematic mismatches. LED1 uses FPGA pin 45 and LED2 uses pin 42. The schematic, source netlist and PCF all agree.

faboutput/` was generated from the routed board, with copper on all four layers. The updated pin map still needs a bitstream build. See ROUTING.md.

Morphcpu: common questions

What microcontroller does the Morphcpu use?

The Morphcpu is built around the ICE40UP5K-SG48I, from the FPGA family.

How big is the Morphcpu PCB?

The Morphcpu measures 70 × 70 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Morphcpu?

80 components, from 23 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Morphcpu design files?

From the ranveerlabs/morphcpu repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Morphcpu design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its AGPL-3.0 license, which ranveerlabs chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Morphcpu without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
