About the ErgoKey initial PCB

ErgoKey initial is an open source Nordic nRF PCB design by Sh4rk-glitch, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 150.1 × 144.2 mm, with 90 components from 6 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-nRF52840-SMD, from the Nordic nRF family. By type, the board carries 42 switches, 42 diodes, 2 ICs and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the keyboards and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

A custom ergonomic keyboard PCB design (ErgoKey) using Choc-style hotswap sockets, Promicro controller footprint, and an optional OLED. The repository contains the PCB files, output DXF/gerbers, footprint helpers, and a YAML-based configuration used to generate outlines and placements.

ErgoKey initial: common questions

What microcontroller does the ErgoKey initial use?

The ErgoKey initial is built around the XIAO-nRF52840-SMD, from the Nordic nRF family.

How big is the ErgoKey initial PCB?

The ErgoKey initial measures 150.1 × 144.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ErgoKey initial?

90 components, from 6 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ErgoKey initial design files?

From the Sh4rk-glitch/EGKey repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ErgoKey initial design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Sh4rk-glitch. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the ErgoKey initial without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Nordic nRF firmware against it before you order a PCB.
