About the Controller PCB

Controller is an open source ESP32 PCB design by SpokeSpice, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 98.7 × 48.5 mm, with 26 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the NCP163ASN330T1G. By type, the board carries 8 resistors, 6 connectors, 3 diodes, 3 capacitors, 2 ICs and 2 switches.

It belongs with the wearables, displays & leds and power & battery designs in this gallery.

Schematics and layouts

The project is divided into two parts, the controller and the arms. Typically a system would have 4 arms, each running at an angle of 90 degrees to the next.

This repository contains the KiCad project files for the controller and the arm PCBs.

The controller board is based on the ESP32 microcontroller and features a USB-C connector for programming. It features a battery holder for an 18650 Li-Ion cell, a 3.3V LDO regulator, an SD card slot and 4 connectors for the arms.

Controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Controller use?

The Controller is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Controller PCB?

The Controller measures 98.7 × 48.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Controller?

26 components, from 15 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Controller design files?

From the SpokeSpice/Hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which SpokeSpice chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
